FAAN to Support Local Airlines as Flag Carriers

Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), disclosed during a Q1 business breakfast meeting that two to three local airlines will receive support to emerge as Nigerian flag carriers. This initiative is part of FAAN's broader plan to strengthen indigenous carriers and improve Nigeria's aviation sector's global competitiveness.

Kuku emphasized that the initiative is expected to significantly enhance passenger and cargo traffic across Nigeria's aviation network. Additionally, FAAN plans to implement broader infrastructure upgrades to improve operational efficiency and passenger experience.

The support for the airlines comes as Nigeria's proposed national carrier project has faced indefinite suspension, as announced by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo. Former Minister Hadi Sirika is facing prosecution for alleged fraud related to the aviation sector.

Keyamo has criticized the previous Ethiopian Airlines agreement, claiming it disproportionately favors Ethiopian Airlines at the expense of Nigeria's domestic aviation sector.
