Uncertainty Surrounds 2026 WAFCON for Super Falcons

The Super Falcons are currently in a state of uncertainty regarding the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is scheduled to commence on March 17 in Morocco. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not finalized the tournament calendar, leading to concerns about the feasibility of the event.

Reports indicate that Morocco may request a postponement to allow the conclusion of its domestic league season, which could disrupt the tournament's schedule. South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, clarified that claims regarding South Africa replacing Morocco as host were premature.

The tournament is crucial as it serves as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the top four semi-finalists earning automatic qualification. The Super Falcons, who recently defeated Cameroon 3-1 in a friendly match, may benefit from additional preparation time, as noted by midfielder Jennifer Echegini.

A statement from CAF is expected within 24 hours to clarify the tournament's status.
