FCCPC Advocates for Unified Consumer Protection in Power Sector

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has urged for enhanced collaboration among regulators in Nigeria’s electricity sector to ensure uniform consumer protection and improved service delivery as states begin to establish independent electricity markets. This call was made by Mr.

Tunji Bello, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, during a Stakeholders’ Engagement on Consumer Protection and Regulatory Cooperation in Nigeria’s Electricity Sector held in Abuja. The enactment of the Electricity Act, 2023, has decentralized the electricity sector, allowing states to create their own regulatory frameworks, which necessitates effective coordination among federal and state institutions.

Bello noted that while this decentralization offers opportunities for better electricity supply and investment, it also requires cooperation to avoid inconsistencies in policy and ensure consumer protection across different regions. He highlighted the distinct yet complementary roles of the FCCPC, NERC, NEMSA, and SERCs in this regulatory landscape, advocating for proactive measures to prevent consumer harm and build public confidence in the evolving electricity market.
