FCSC Chairman Calls for Civil Service Reform in Abuja

Professor Tunji Olaopa, the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), called for extensive reforms in Nigeria's civil service system during the International Civil Service Conference 2026 held at Eagle Square, Abuja. He highlighted the importance of strengthening meritocracy within the profession to adapt to emerging global realities.

Established in 1954 and reconstituted in 1979, the FCSC plays a crucial role in appointing, promoting, and disciplining civil servants while safeguarding the nation's merit system. Professor Olaopa noted the detrimental impact of political interference, inadequate funding, and weak institutional structures on the civil service's effectiveness.

He disclosed that under his current leadership, the FCSC has developed a comprehensive reform strategy approved by the Federal Executive Council, which includes digitizing recruitment processes and restoring Nigeria's participation in regional public service institutions. However, he warned that challenges such as inadequate digital infrastructure and worker welfare concerns could hinder these reforms, urging a balance between performance management and employee support.
