FCT Education Secretary Warns of WASCE Crisis Amid Strike

Danlami Hayyo, the FCT Education Secretary, has condemned the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for its ongoing industrial action, warning that it poses a significant risk to students' performance in the upcoming West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). During a school inspection, he highlighted the psychological impact of the strike on students, noting that union members forcibly removed eager students from classrooms.

Hayyo questioned the union's commitment to the welfare of its own children during this critical examination period. He emphasized that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will not reschedule its examination calendar, which could lead to mass failures among students in the FCT.

Hayyo also clarified the financial situation regarding the union's demands, stating that Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, had paid 40 percent of the teachers' entitlements from the previous year. He urged the NUT to return to the bargaining table to avoid destabilizing the education system and to ensure that children are not discouraged from learning.
