NUT Suspends Strike After Wike's Intervention in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its strike due to an intervention by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) held at the Teachers' House in Gwagwalada on April 20, 2026.

Teachers are expected to resume their duties on April 27, 2026. The strike was initiated over the non-payment of arrears owed to members across six area councils.

Wike approved a monthly fund of N5 billion to address these unpaid entitlements. The agreement includes sourcing N2 billion from the FCT's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and N3 billion from the statutory IGR allocation to area councils.

The union has also secured a commitment to remove controversial policies that hinder teacher promotions. However, the NUT warned that the suspension of the strike is conditional on the prompt implementation of the agreement, emphasizing that failure to do so may lead to a reassessment of their position.
