Voter Apathy Affects AMAC Elections in Abuja

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections in 2026 experienced notable voter apathy, as many residents chose to stay away from polling units. Reports highlighted that at polling unit 110 near Government Secondary School in Garki, only three voters were sighted.

An elderly woman was overheard requesting water and ink for thumbprinting, indicating a lack of resources provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). At polling unit 115 in Area 10, opposite Garki General Hospital, only three voters were expected, with INEC staff seen gossiping rather than engaging with potential voters.

Polling unit 041 in Area 3 Garki had an expectation of 1,900 voters but only 20 had voted by 10:30 AM. An anonymous INEC staff member expressed concerns about residents feeling that the election results were predetermined, leading to a lack of interest in voting.
