FCT Teachers Suspend Strike After Government Agreement

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their strike action, which began on April 20, 2026, due to unresolved issues affecting primary and secondary school workers. The suspension follows an agreement reached with the government during an emergency meeting.

Abdullahi Shafa, the chairman of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), announced the decision on Sunday in Gwagwalada. The agreement includes a financial package to address key demands, such as monthly commitment funds and contributions from the area council.

Additionally, it covers the payment of outstanding allowances, including a 40 percent peculiar allowance and the settlement of arrears owed to teachers. The Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to engage relevant authorities to promote issues, including the removal of conditions that slow career advancement.

Teachers are expected to resume duties on Monday, April 27, 2026, but the union warns that they will revisit their position if the government fails to fully implement the agreement.
