Atiku Abubakar Critiques Low Voter Turnout in FCT Polls

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, expressed deep concern over the outcomes of the recent FCT area council elections, highlighting a record low voter turnout. In a statement released on Sunday, he described this turnout as a "damning verdict" on the state of Nigeria's democracy under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Abubakar attributed the poor civic participation to a politically toxic environment characterized by intolerance and intimidation, which he claims has systematically weakened opposition voices. He alleged that the Tinubu-led government has shrunk democratic space and harassed dissenting opinions, fostering a climate where alternative political views are treated as threats.

Abubakar cautioned that when citizens lose faith in the electoral process, democracy begins to die, emphasizing that the ongoing erosion of participatory governance could cause lasting damage to Nigeria's democratic foundations. He called for opposition parties to unite in response to the challenges posed by the current government.
