FCT Teachers Launch Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have initiated an indefinite strike effective Monday, as announced by the Nigeria Union of Teachers. This decision follows a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which expired on March 29.

The union's communiqué, signed by state chairman Abdullahi Shafa, state secretary Margaret Jethro, and public secretary Ibukun Adekey, emphasized that teachers should keep children at home until further notice. The strike results from unresolved issues, including the implementation of a minimum wage payment of N70,000 and nine months of arrears for primary school teachers.

Although Wike's administration had previously suspended a 14-week strike on July 9, 2025, the union noted that the minister's intervention did not address the establishment of a committee mandated to resolve outstanding entitlements. The union has called for the removal of vacancies as a precondition for promoting classroom teachers and a total review of the 2024 promotion exercise.
