FCTA Launches Rabies Vaccination for 20,000 Pets

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has initiated a two-week mass vaccination campaign aimed at vaccinating between 15,000 and 20,000 dogs and cats across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This campaign, coordinated by the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, was launched in response to rabies cases reported in Gwagwalada and Kwali Area Councils.

Sulieman Ango, the Mandate Secretary of the secretariat, announced the deployment of over 100 veterinary officers to ensure comprehensive coverage during the exercise, which will extend to all 62 wards of the FCT. Vaccination will be conducted free of charge at designated centers throughout the two weeks.

Dr. Karnak Dandam, the Director of Veterinary Services, emphasized that rabies is a deadly but preventable disease, highlighting the importance of vaccination. The FCTA confirmed eight rabies cases and two deaths on July 15, prompting this urgent intervention to prevent further spread.
