FDA Backs DSS Decision to Pause Sowore's Prosecution

The Foundation for Democracy in Africa (FDA) has expressed support for the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, who has appealed to the Federal High Court to halt the prosecution of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, until after the 2027 presidential election. The FDA described this decision as a commitment to democracy, due process, and the integrity of the electoral process.

In a statement signed by Secretary Comrade Daniel Elachi Omaga and Co-convener Comrade Isah Abubakar, the FDA emphasized that no presidential candidate should face procedural disadvantages due to pending criminal cases during elections. The FDA noted that this decision aligns with regional and international democratic principles and commended Ajayi for his commitment to due process since taking office in August 2024.

The group clarified that suspending Sowore’s prosecution does not imply he is above the law, but is a responsible exercise of discretion to ensure a fair electoral process.
