Nigeria Evacuates 1,230 Stranded Citizens from Niger

The Federal Government of Nigeria successfully evacuated 1,230 stranded Nigerians from the Niger Republic, reinforcing its commitment to protect citizens abroad amid regional challenges. The operation was coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa announcing the return of citizens in two separate batches: the first group of 708 arrived on March 23, 2026, and the second batch of 522 arrived on March 29, 2026.

The humanitarian operation was carried out in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which provided logistical and technical support for the smooth movement of returnees. Upon arrival in Kano, the evacuees received assistance from a coordinated team of government agencies and humanitarian partners to ensure orderly reception and immediate support.

Agencies involved included the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigerian Immigration Service. The Ministry emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad and expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the Nigerien government throughout the evacuation process.
