FG to Halt Funding for Underperforming Federal Institutions in Education Sector

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its intention to stop funding some federal institutions in the education sector due to poor student enrollment figures. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) will no longer allocate funds to institutions admitting fewer than 1,000 students.

This decision follows reports of several federal tertiary institutions admitting very low numbers of students, such as the Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi, admitting only 184 students. The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, emphasized the need for institutions to meet minimum enrollment benchmarks to receive financial support.

Education analyst Ayodamola Oluwatoyin advised parents to avoid new institutions and opt for stronger universities instead.
