FG Distributes 2,000 Tractors to Enhance Farming

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated the distribution of 2,000 tractors to promote mechanized farming, with the program officially launched by Senator Abubakar Kyari at the Sheda in Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory. The first tranche includes 600 tractors, marking the beginning of a phased rollout that will ultimately deliver 750 and 650 tractors in subsequent phases.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy involving a N50 billion catalytic seed fund from the Bank of Industry, aimed at unlocking investments in the agricultural sector. The government plans to mobilize N250 billion to support one million smallholder farmers cultivating an average of one hectare by 2026.

Additionally, 36 mobile service trucks will be deployed for technical support, and seven mega mechanized service centers will be constructed nationwide. A mega tractor assembly plant is also planned, capable of producing 2,000 to 4,000 tractors annually, reducing import dependency.

The initiative targets not just the 2,000 beneficiaries but aims to impact approximately 1.2 million farmers across 1.5 million hectares, emphasizing mechanized service provision over private ownership.
