Nigerian Government Suspends Sachet Alcohol Ban Amid Security Concerns

The Nigerian government, under the leadership of the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Terrence Kuanum, has yielded to pressure and directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to suspend the enforcement activities related to the ban on 200ml pet bottle alcohol drinks. The decision to halt the sealing of factories and warehouses was made due to security implications and concerns raised by various stakeholders.

The ban was part of the National Alcohol Policy signed by the Federal Ministry of Health in line with President Bola Tinubu's directives. The suspension aims to prevent economic disruptions and potential security risks.

The move follows protests from stakeholders, including tobacco and alcohol associations, who argued that the ban could negatively impact local producers and the economy.
