FG Calls Emergency Meeting on Cooking Gas as Prices Surge Nationwide

The Federal Government has convened an emergency meeting bringing together key stakeholders to address the escalating cost of cooking gas across Nigeria. The gathering included officials from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, security agencies such as the Department of State Services and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, as well as Nigeria Police Force representatives.

The session aimed to identify and counter practices hampering stable supply of liquefied petroleum gas to Nigerian consumers. Rising LPG prices have intensified financial strain on households already grappling with increased living costs.

The meeting examined factors contributing to sharp price movements, with particular focus on product diversion, hoarding, and speculative storage practices within the market. Regulators and industry operators discussed where interventions across the supply chain could ease access to the fuel, which serves as a critical energy source for domestic cooking and heating nationwide.

Officials at the meeting stressed government commitment to stabilising the market and ensuring cleaner energy remains affordable for ordinary Nigerians. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources characterised LPG as a vital component of Nigeria's energy transition agenda.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority was noted as having plans in place to mitigate supply shortages. The emergency session brought together government representatives, industry regulators, gas producers, market distributors, terminal operators, and major industry associations to assess the situation.

Discussions centred on both immediate remedies and longer-term structural solutions needed to restore market stability and improve consumer access to cooking gas at sustainable price levels.
