Nigeria Explores Partnerships for National Census Funding

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu, is considering partnerships with development partners to secure funding for the upcoming national census. During a visit to the National Population Commission, led by Chairman Aminu Yusuf, Bagudu acknowledged the financial challenges associated with conducting a modern census.

He assured that the government is committed to ensuring the success of the census, recognizing its cost implications. Bagudu stressed the importance of reliable demographic data in addressing Nigeria's developmental challenges and in strengthening public policy.

He noted that accurate population data is essential for equitable resource distribution and effective policy design. The minister highlighted Nigeria's growing population as a significant economic asset, drawing comparisons to countries like China and India, where large populations have driven economic growth.

The National Population Commission is tasked with conducting the census and coordinating civil registration systems to produce vital demographic statistics for government planning.
