Nigerian Government Successfully Contains Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Jigawa State

The Federal Government of Nigeria successfully contained a recent foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak on a commercial farm in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State. The outbreak was swiftly addressed by deploying an eight-man rapid response team led by Dr.

Adeniyi Adedoyin, Director of the Project Coordination Unit at the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development. The team, which included experts from the Ministry and the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), supported by the Jigawa State Livestock Office and leaders from Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and Alli Company, identified and ring-vaccinated livestock in the affected area.

The government's quick response was commended by stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of proper disease reporting and surveillance to protect livestock and farmers.
