Nigeria's Government Prioritizes Child Labour Elimination

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared the elimination of child labour a national development priority, emphasizing its connection to education, social protection, economic growth, and human capital development. Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made this announcement on Wednesday in Abuja during a National Dialogue on implementing Nigeria’s National Child Labour Policy and National Action Plan.

Akume stated that the government would enhance labour administration, inspection systems, and child protection mechanisms while tackling poverty and inadequate access to education. He urged state governments and employers to support the National Action Plan and ensure supply chains are free from child labour.

Dr Muhammad Dingyadi, Minister of Labour and Employment, highlighted that child labour obstructs human dignity and education, with millions of children engaged in hazardous work across various sectors. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to enforcing relevant laws and standards.

The reviewed National Policy on Child Labour and National Action Plan for 2026–2030 aims to provide a comprehensive framework for prevention and accountability.
