Nigeria Declares June 12, 2026, Public Holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of Democracy Day. This announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Dr.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalen Ajani.

The date is significant in Nigeria's history, set aside to honor the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles made democratic governance possible in the country. Dr.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the government's commitment to democratic ideals, the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance principles.
