Nigerian Army Deploys Troops to Support Benin Elections

The Nigerian Army has announced the deployment of troops to the Benin Republic in April 2026 as a proactive measure to support the country's democratic transition during its election period. According to a statement from Colonel Appolonia Anel, the deployment is aimed at stabilizing the region and preventing any breakdown of law and order.

The troops will not be assigned electoral duties but will provide a stabilizing presence throughout the electoral process. The operation, named Atilehin Alafiya II, involves conducting patrols and maintaining a visible security presence in critical areas of Cotonou.

The mission is designed to deter potential security threats and reinforce public confidence in the democratic process. The Nigerian Army's commitment to regional peace is underscored by Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who commended the troops for their professionalism.

The deployment coincides with the presidential inauguration of Romuald Wadagni, ensuring comprehensive security during the event.
