Nigerian Army Deploys Troops to Benin for Elections

In April 2026, the Nigerian Army, under the command of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deployed a company of troops to the Benin Republic as part of proactive efforts to support the democratic process and maintain law and order during the country's election period. Colonel Appolonia Anel, acting director of army public relations, disclosed that the deployment aims to reinforce stability and ensure peace during the electoral process, aligning with Nigeria's commitment to regional peace cooperation.

Although the troops are not assigned direct electoral duties, their strategic positioning is intended to provide a stabilizing presence during the polls. The troops conducted routine patrols and maintained a visible security presence across strategic areas within Cotonou, contributing significantly to the smooth execution of the presidential inauguration ceremony for Romuald Wadagni.

Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu commended the troops for their discipline and professionalism, reflecting the core values of the Nigerian Army.
