FG Commends JONAPWD for PWDs Population Data

The Federal Government of Nigeria praised the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) for its recent presentation of disaggregated data on persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria, which took place on Wednesday in Abuja. According to the report, Kano State has approximately 2.5 million PWDs, while Lagos State has around 2.1 million, contributing to an estimated total of 3.5 million PWDs nationwide.

Senior Special Assistant to the President, Hon. Moham Abba Isa, and the Secretary of the National Population Commission, Adeyi Daniel, acknowledged that this data will aid in achieving governmental objectives and represents a significant milestone in advancing inclusive development and evidence-based policy-making for PWDs across Nigeria.

The report highlighted that the largest group of PWDs consists of individuals with physical disabilities, numbering 8.2 million, followed by the deaf community at 7.7 million. Gender distribution indicates that there are 17.6 million male PWDs and approximately 17.2 million female PWDs.

Abdulahi Usman, the National President of JONAPWD, emphasized the importance of addressing gender dimensions within the disability demographic.
