FG, Imo State Sign MoU to Upgrade Okigwe Hospital

On June 3, 2026, the Federal Government, represented by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and the Imo State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding to upgrade the General Hospital Okigwe to a Federal Medical Centre. This initiative aims to strengthen healthcare delivery and expand access to specialist medical services in Imo State.

Dr. Iziak Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, commended Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma for prioritizing healthcare development.

The Minister noted that this upgrade aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision to bring specialist healthcare services closer to Nigerians and reduce medical tourism. The Federal Government will provide necessary support, including funding, infrastructure development, and personnel recruitment, to ensure the success of the new Federal Medical Centre.

Following the signing, a comprehensive audit of the facility's workforce will commence, with plans to retain existing staff and identify gaps for additional recruitment.
