FG Launches 10th Surveyors Council of Nigeria in Abuja

On July 21, 2026, Sen. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, inaugurated the 10th Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) in Abuja.

This inauguration is a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria's geospatial governance and digital modernization agenda. In his address, Sen.

Akume underscored the evolving landscape of surveying and the critical role of SURCON in regulating and licensing surveying professionals. He highlighted the necessity of updating licensing standards to incorporate modern geospatial tools and emphasized the importance of integrating geospatial intelligence into national planning and security frameworks.

Akume noted that moving the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation under the Presidency elevates Nigeria's geospatial governance. He urged council members to serve with integrity and innovation, focusing on curriculum updates and capacity building.

Surv. Moshood Onifade Akinwade, the President of SURCON, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and committed to achieving a digitized geographical management system for Nigeria.
