Nigeria Launches $552M Fund for Basic Education Reform

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Federal Government launched a $552 million fund to reform basic education, with the initiative spearheaded by Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education.

The program, launched in Abuja, aims to enhance the quality of basic education through a partnership with the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education. It focuses on improving early grade learning, promoting equitable access to quality education, and strengthening institutional capacity at the state level.

The fund is designed to improve foundational learning outcomes and widen access to quality basic education, aligning with the Nigerian education sector's renewed initiatives. The reform is part of a broader strategy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to implement large-scale public sector reforms.

The education sector has seen significant financial allocations, with a 302 percent increase in federal allocations in 2022 and a projected N3.520 trillion for the 2026 fiscal year, marking the highest allocation on record.
