Nigeria Launches $552M Initiative for Education Reform

The Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled a $552 million initiative to enhance basic education reform, as stated in a release from the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday in Abuja. Folasade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, reported that the initiative aims to improve foundational learning, expand access to quality basic education, and strengthen the educational system across participating states.

Minister of Education Tunji Alausa emphasized that the program aligns with Nigeria's educational sector renewal initiatives and promotes transparency and result-based reforms. The funding marks a significant milestone, being the fastest activation of educational financing in the country's history.

The federal allocation to the education sector increased by 302 percent in 2022, with a total of N3.520 trillion allocated for the 2026 fiscal year, the highest to date. This initiative, co-financed by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, is expected to improve educational outcomes and institutional capacity across participating states.
