FG Launches Initiative to Combat Adult Illiteracy in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched an initiative to tackle adult illiteracy, named the Staff Led Literacy Initiative (NSLFI). This program, spearheaded by the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), aims to establish and run literacy centers in communities around the Federal Capital Territory, targeting 300,000 youth and adults.

The initiative was announced during a launch event in Abuja, where Prof. Garba Maitasfir, the Executive Secretary of NMEC, and Dr.

John Edeh, the representative director of education development, were present. Prof.

Maitasfir emphasized that illiteracy remains a significant barrier to national economic progress and social equity. The initiative will focus on advocacy, community sensitization, and the establishment of vocational literacy centers, providing teaching materials and training staff in adult learning methods.

The program will integrate basic literacy with functional skills, including digital literacy, financial literacy, health education, and vocational training, aiming to transform literacy practices into tools for lifelong learning and national development.
