NMEC Launches Initiative to Boost Adult Literacy in Nigeria

The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) launched a new initiative on Tuesday aimed at addressing adult illiteracy in Nigeria, targeting 300,000 youth and adults. The initiative, led by NMEC staff, will establish and run literacy centers in communities identified as having high needs.

Prof. Garba Maitasfir, representing the Director of Education Development, John Edeh, emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader agenda to renew hope and improve literacy skills, which are essential for economic progress and social equity.

The program will focus on various literacy functions, including digital, financial, and vocational training, and will involve NMEC staff across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The initiative aims to tackle the alarming 31% functional illiteracy rate among adults, with support from local leaders and non-governmental organizations.

This effort follows the recent restoration of NMEC's full status by the Federal Executive Council, which is part of a larger strategy to enhance Nigeria's literacy challenges.
