NMEC Launches Initiative to Boost Literacy for 300,000

The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) launched a new literacy initiative on Tuesday, aiming to target 300,000 youth and adults to enhance functional literacy skills. The initiative, led by NMEC staff, will establish literacy centers in communities identified as having high needs.

Prof. Garba Maitasfir, representing the Director of Education Development, John Edeh, emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader action plan under the "Renew Hope" agenda of the current administration.

The program seeks to tackle the significant barrier of illiteracy, which affects 31% of adults in Nigeria, by integrating basic literacy, digital literacy, financial literacy, health education, and vocational training. NMEC staff will play a crucial role in community engagement and support, with a focus on underserved areas.

The initiative aligns with the recent restoration of NMEC's full status by the Federal Executive Council, which aims to address Nigeria's literacy challenges and equip citizens with essential skills.
