Nigeria Launches Committee to Enhance Border Security

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Federal Government launched a Project Steering Committee in Abuja to combat transnational crimes and improve border management. The committee, led by Comptroller General Kemi Nanna Nandap, will review and approve a work plan to provide strategic guidance for the project.

The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in managing border security and migration. The Netherlands, through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), is providing technical support, including resources like the Edison software license and the Passport Examination Program Manual (PEPM III).

With Nigeria sharing a 4,000-kilometer land border with four neighboring countries and approximately 853 kilometers of coastline, the project will enhance surveillance and control through modern equipment and mobile teams. Isabel Wolfsgrub, head of the ICMPD mission in Nigeria, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in addressing migration security challenges.

The project aims to establish a highly trained integrated mobile team to respond effectively to irregular migration and cross-border crime.
