Nigerian Government to Upgrade Polytechnics for Degree Awarding

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Education represented by Dr. Tunji Alausa, is initiating amendments to the Polytechnic Act to empower polytechnics to award degrees.

This policy shift is intended to address the historical Higher National Diploma (HND) dichotomy and elevate the status of polytechnic qualifications by enabling them to confer degrees. The reform seeks to position polytechnic education on a stronger footing, emphasizing industry-driven training and preserving core strengths.

By granting degree-awarding status to polytechnics, the government anticipates attracting stronger industrial partnerships, enhancing funding opportunities, increasing public confidence, and ensuring global competitiveness through clear standards and quality assurance mechanisms. This strategic move is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's agenda, focusing on job creation, industrial growth, and human capital development.
