Nigerian Government to Grant Degree Status to Polytechnics, Abolishing HND Dichotomy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to abolish the HND dichotomy, granting degree status to polytechnics to empower technical and vocational education. This reform, unveiled during a high-level retreat in Abuja, aims to end decades of discrimination against polytechnic graduates and elevate their status within Nigeria's higher education system.

The policy shift is intended to preserve the core strengths of polytechnics in industrial-focused training, aligning with the government's agenda for job creation, industrial growth, and human capital development. The Minister of Education, Alausa, emphasized the importance of building a skill-driven economy and ensuring graduates are industry-ready.

The government also highlighted the need for transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership in the new era of polytechnic administration.
