FG and NASS Support Harmonized Roles in Electricity Market

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the National Assembly have expressed their commitment to supporting complementary roles for regulators within the multi-tier Nigerian electricity market. This was articulated during a workshop focused on legal and policy regulatory harmonization between federal and state institutions in the decentralized Nigerian electricity supply industry.

Mr. Rilwan Babalola, a special advisor to the President on Power, emphasized the importance of transitioning towards a collaborative approach rather than protecting separate jurisdictions.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, reaffirmed the committee's commitment to enabling laws that allow federal and state electricity regulators to perform complementary roles. He stated that the ultimate success of decentralization should not be measured merely by the number of states establishing electricity markets but by achieving a coherent, efficient, and bankable integrated electricity market.

The need for harmonized regulatory operations was echoed by Joseph Tegbe, Chairman of NERC, and Dr. Musiliu Oseni, highlighting the importance of cooperation and mutual respect in regulatory oversight.
