New ASUU Agreement Enhances University Autonomy in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has reached a new agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that aims to strengthen university autonomy and improve the educational landscape. The agreement includes a 40% pay rise for academic staff and an increase in research funding.

Dasuki Arabi, the Director of the Bureau of Public Service Reform (BPSR), emphasized that the agreement seeks to safeguard the success of university administration and address structural issues affecting institutions, including funding gaps. The FGN plans to enhance infrastructure development and support tertiary education through a trust fund and federal intervention.

Additionally, a student loan scheme will be implemented to tackle financial barriers faced by students, ensuring that no qualified student is left behind. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, expressed readiness to collaborate with BPSR to develop staff competencies and enhance postgraduate training programs.
