FG Announces 2025 ASUU Agreement for University Autonomy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed a 2025 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) designed to strengthen university autonomy and ensure long-term stability in Nigeria's tertiary education sector. Dasuki Arabi, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reform, made this announcement during a work visit to Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, on Tuesday.

The agreement is set to take effect in January 2026 and includes provisions for a 40 percent pay rise for academic staff, enhanced research funding, and improvements in various entitlements. The government aims to address structural issues and funding gaps while committing to increase university funding annually to bolster infrastructure in the tertiary education sector.

Additionally, a student loan scheme is being implemented to remove financial barriers for indigent students, ensuring that no qualified student is left behind. The government also approved a payroll system to enhance transparency and verify personnel records across federal institutions.
