FG Approves Major Reforms for NYSC Leadership

On June 29, 2026, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved extensive reforms for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodel Olawande, recommended the reforms, which include establishing a comprehensive review scheme for the NYSC, originally established in 1973.

The reforms aim to strengthen national unity, enhance employment opportunities, promote entrepreneurship, and equip corps members with practical skills needed in today's economy. Key measures include digitizing NYSC operations, improving the security and welfare of corps members, upgrading orientation camp facilities, and redesigning formal graduation ceremonies.

The reforms also propose amendments to the NYSC Act to align the scheme with contemporary national priorities and workforce demands. Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, stated that the mandatory one-year national service remains unchanged but will incorporate flexible skill-based learning pathways throughout the service year.
