FEC Approves Major Reforms for NYSC Program

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved extensive reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during a meeting in Abuja. This decision is part of the federal government's plan to modernize the NYSC, which was established five decades ago.

The reforms will introduce a new leadership structure that replaces military oversight with civilian leadership while maintaining military support for the security of corps members. Ayodel Olawand, the Minister of Youth Development, described this initiative as the first comprehensive review of the NYSC since its creation 53 years ago.

The reforms aim to equip young Nigerians with practical skills and improve service delivery in line with the country's economic development priorities. Key changes include a technology-driven approach, a redesigned six-week orientation program, and a new uniform that reflects national pride.

The reforms will also amend the NYSC Act to provide a legal framework for implementation, with the aim of fostering national integration and empowering youth.
