Nigeria Launches Medipool to Cut Medicine Costs

On February 16, 2026, the Nigerian Federal Government signed a memorandum to operationalize Medipool as the National Group Purchasing Organization (GPO). This initiative aims to coordinate bulk purchases of medicines to lower costs and improve access to health commodities across Nigeria.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the operationalization of Medipool will facilitate price negotiations and enhance quality assurance within Nigeria's health supply chain. The scheme aligns with key national priorities, including basic healthcare provision, and is part of a presidential initiative to unlock the healthcare value chain.

Prof. Ali Pate explained that the project will initially operate under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund and target federal tertiary hospitals.

Medipool is expected to leverage pooled demand to negotiate better prices with manufacturers and suppliers while monitoring quality standards. The GPO aims to improve procurement transparency, reduce inefficiencies in medicine distribution, and ensure essential health commodities reach facilities reliably.

The rising costs of medicines in Nigeria, particularly essential drugs, have prompted this initiative.
