FG Collaborates with UN to Combat Biodiversity Loss

The Federal Government of Nigeria is partnering with several United Nations agencies to combat biodiversity loss, climate change, and land degradation. The initiative involves the implementation of the GEF 7 biodiversity project at Okomu National Park in Edo State, led by Balarab Abba Lawal, the Minister of Environment.

The project aims to conserve biodiversity and sustainably manage lowland forest landscapes across Edo, Ogun, and Ondo states. The FAO is executing the project, which includes promoting integrated landscape management and ecosystem restoration.

The Nigerian government will continue to engage with the GEF, FAO, UNDP, UNEP, and UNIDO to mobilize resources and technical support for sustainable environmental management. Lawal also announced the renovation of ranger barracks at Okomu National Park and similar facilities in Ogun State.

Nosa Adam disclosed that Edo State plans to plant 6,000 tree seedlings as part of efforts to combat climate change and protect ecosystems.
