Nigeria Unveils Security Plan for Schools in Border and Riverine Communities

The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed a security plan to bolster safety in schools situated in border and riverine communities. The initiative, known as the Safe School Transit Plan 2026-2030, aims to ensure a secure learning environment across the country.

The project involves strengthening security infrastructure, expanding psychosocial support, and enhancing emergency preparedness for students and teachers. The plan prioritizes vulnerable locations to guarantee security and resilience in host communities.

Launched in 2014 following the Chibok schoolgirl abduction in Borno State, the project has received support from global figures like Gordon Brown and partnerships with organizations such as the Nigerian Global Business Coalition and the UN. The government has allocated N144.8 billion for the Safe School Plan 2023-2026, including measures like establishing school protection squads and a national safe school response coordination center.

Despite ongoing security concerns, efforts continue to safeguard students and education nationwide.
