Nigeria's Initiative to Secure Schools Amidst Insecurity

The Nigerian government, through the National Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has revealed that approximately 60,000 of Nigeria's 81,000 schools lack adequate security, necessitating urgent intervention. This disclosure was made by Dr.

Tunji Alausa during a meeting in Abuja. The government plans to develop operational strategies to enhance school safety, including deploying specialized female security squads and establishing a dedicated safe school department within the Federal Ministry of Education.

The initiative aims to create a secure environment for learning, with a proposed investment of N144.8 billion for the period 2023-2026. Despite previous efforts, including the launch of the Safe School Project in 2014 following the Chibok abduction, concerns persist regarding the vulnerability of schools to attacks.

Recent incidents, such as the abduction of students in Kebbi and Niger States, highlight the ongoing security challenges. The government is committed to ensuring the safety of children in schools and has appointed the NSCDC as the lead agency for school protection.
