Nigerian Government to Enhance Safe School Coordination with NSCDC for Student Protection

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening safe school initiatives in Nigeria through enhanced coordination with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

During an official visit to the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja, Alausa emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards attacks on schools and the importance of deploying necessary measures to safeguard children and ensure uninterrupted learning nationwide. The government aims to establish a full-fledged Safe School Department within the Federal Ministry of Education to improve collaboration with the NSCDC.

This initiative includes implementing a technology-driven alert mechanism with panic buttons linked to a command center for rapid security personnel deployment. The NSCDC identified as the lead agency for school protection, highlighted the urgent need to address security vulnerabilities in schools, with a significant number lacking adequate security measures.

The government plans to establish a specialized female squad to enhance community security structures and prevent security threats against schools. Funding constraints remain a major challenge, requiring deeper collaboration between the Ministry and the NSCDC to ensure a safe learning environment for students nationwide.
