FG Boosts Civil Servants' Welfare with Allowance Increases

On Friday, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced significant reforms to enhance the welfare of civil servants, as outlined by Didi Walson-Jack, the head of the civil service. The Federal Executive Council approved a sweeping increase in peculiar allowances and welfare benefits, aimed at improving the financial situation and morale of public servants.

Key highlights include a 100% increase in duty tour allowances, allowing civil servants to receive full allowances for training programs, regardless of travel requirements. Additionally, a new exit benefit scheme will be introduced for retiring civil servants, providing a total annual emolument exit package equivalent to 100% of their contributions to the pension scheme, effective January 1, 2026.

Walson-Jack emphasized that these measures are steps toward ensuring that no public servant leaves service without adequate financial support. The government also confirmed the operationalization of an employee compensation scheme designed to provide financial protection for workers suffering job-related injuries or death, amid rising living costs and pressure from labor unions for improved welfare.
