Federal Government and NLC Agree on Worker Welfare Measures

The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) reached agreements on improved worker welfare after conciliation meetings held on October 22 and 27, 2026, in Abuja. Chaired by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and led by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, the meetings addressed various labor-related issues.
The government will implement a transport intervention payment of ₦70,000 for six months starting in November 2026, alongside the approval of peculiar allowances effective from May 1, 2026, with outstanding arrears to be paid in three equal monthly installments beginning in November. Health workers will receive 19 months of outstanding allowances within three months starting in December 2026.
A Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee will be formed to discuss the national minimum wage, although the effective date remains unresolved. The meeting also addressed tax relief for workers and progress on hazard allowances for agricultural workers.
Both parties agreed to reconvene in one month to assess progress.
