Nigeria Government Addresses NLC's ILO Complaint on Labor Issues

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially responded to the complaint lodged by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) concerning alleged anti-labour practices. Dr. Kamil Shoretire, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, confirmed this response during a training workshop for labour correspondents in Abuja.

He stated that Nigeria met the ILO's September 1 deadline to address outstanding issues raised by the NLC. The NLC, represented by its President Joe Ajaero, had alleged violations of the Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining Convention, 1949 (No. 98), claiming persistent violations against workers and threats to trade union leaders.

Shoretire also mentioned that while a timetable for fresh minimum wage negotiations has not yet been announced, discussions are ongoing in various sectors, including health and education, to ensure that agreed wage adjustments are reflected in the next year's budget. Additional incentives for workers and citizens are expected to be announced soon.
