Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Combat Glaucoma Awareness

On Thursday, during a press briefing in Abuja, Dr. Iziak Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, reaffirmed the Federal Government of Nigeria's commitment to addressing glaucoma.

This announcement coincided with activities marking the 2026 World Glaucoma Week. Dr.

Salako emphasized the government's prioritization of integrated eye care services across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels to ensure early detection and management of glaucoma. The government plans to launch the Nigeria Glaucoma Guideline Toolkit, which will standardize diagnosis, treatment, and referral protocols, empowering healthcare workers nationwide to deliver high-quality care.

Training for ophthalmologists in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is part of this initiative. Additionally, the government will provide free glaucoma examinations and medications in selected health facilities across 11 states and the FCT.

The theme for this year's event, "Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World," calls for collective action against this public health challenge.
