FG Commits to Reform Nigerian Correctional Service

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to reforming the Nigerian Correctional Service, as stated by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during an event in Kaduna.

This initiative is part of a strategic reform agenda aimed at enhancing national security and improving service delivery across the country. The Minister emphasized the importance of discipline and professionalism within the correctional system and highlighted ongoing reforms that focus on inmate rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The reforms aim to eliminate the stigma associated with incarceration and ensure that inmates can contribute positively to society upon their release. Additionally, the Ministry has commenced the implementation of a performance management system across paramilitary agencies, which is designed to promote efficiency, strengthen accountability, and enhance operational effectiveness.

The six-month basic course for correctional staff covers custodial and non-custodial procedures, equipping officers with the necessary skills to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
