FG Affirms Respect for Catholic Church Amid Economic Hardship

The federal government of Nigeria reaffirmed its respect for the Catholic Church, recognizing it as a significant development partner. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stated that President Bola Tinubu is committed to enhancing engagement with faith-based organizations to address national challenges.

Akume assured that the current economic hardships faced by Nigerians are merely a passing phase, expected to yield benefits from ongoing reforms. He acknowledged the Catholic Church's contributions to education, healthcare, humanitarian services, peacebuilding, and moral leadership.

The government noted public reactions following a recent meeting between President Tinubu and the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), where concerns about economic hardship, insecurity, and governance were raised. Cardinal John Onaiyekan defended the bishops' position, asserting their duty to "speak truth to power." Akume emphasized the necessity of partnerships with faith communities and other institutions for national development.
